JOHN GASKINS joined Sports Talk with Craig and John in June 2008 and started his own solo show, creatively named The John Gaskins Show in June of 2009. While Craig and John is all about local issues and interview-driven, John's show brings you more in-depth talk and interviews about the major college and pro teams of interest in the area (Vikings, Packers, Hawkeyes, Huskers, & Twins, in particular).
In his first year at KWSN, John received awards from both the Northwest Broadcast News Association and the South Dakota Associated Press for his play-by-play call of the all-Sioux Falls state championship football game (Lincoln beating Washington in a thriller). John came to KWSN after three years as the sports director at KWOA Radio in Worthington, Minnesota (pop. 11,000, 45 miles east of Sioux Falls) where he hosted a midday sports talk show, co-hosted one of those goofy FM morning shows, was the voice of high school and community college teams, and became acclimated with the area's undying love for the the eternally damned Twins and Vikings.
John grew up in Omaha and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where he covered Husker sports for newspaper, TV, and radio outlets. After a TV internship in the San Francisco area and graduating from NU, John started his full-time broadcasting career in Medford, Oregon, at KTVL-TV as a sports anchor/reporter. After two years of that, he became a sports talk host and high school football announcer on the ESPN Radio Medford affiliate for a season before moving back to Lincoln to help produce a sports radio show on the ESPN affiliate there. Shortly after arriving, the show host left, leaving John to latch on to another show before landing the sports director job in Minnesota, which offered him far more hosting and game-calling opportunities. And that led to this.
John is 31 and single and loves to go out to the Sioux Falls bars. He also loves road-tripping to Omaha, Lincoln, the Twin Cities, and the Black Hills to see friends. His interests include sports, fitness, golf, running, swimming, hiking, boating, traveling, mountains, beaches, coffee shops, bars, jazz bars, blues bars, and TV documentaries on anything from sports figures to politicians to those brain-dead VH1 gab-a-thons about the 70's, 80's and 90's.
Oh, and Wild Water West. That is John's summer weekend home.
